delivery time?

Hi all;

"Hypothetically", how long would it take to deliver the following from the Penobscot Bay, Maine, to New Bern, NC. Timeframe September:

Ketch, 46ft, 33ft lwl, 85hp engine, good sails, Professional (or semi-pro) crew.

Chris

My guess is two weeks?

2 weeks sounds like a speed if they go out side some, if they stay inside it could be longer. if they go out side the whole way it could be 7 or 8 days

I'd point out that weather is a serious factor. If the winds are blowing strongly from the SW... your progress is going to be really minimal.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I think 7 to 8 days is REALLY ambitious, even if you went outside You'd have to average over 5kts to do it and then you'd have to basically do a direct course. It's at least 800 miles on a direct line. I don't know what the prevailing current is, but I think that you are going the "wrong" way and that will impede your progress.

I would plan on 10 days minimum. Two weeks is a leisurely sail.

While there are no guarantees the wind along the US East Coast is generally NE to E in September. Offshore inside the Gulf Stream you are unlikely to make the trip in less than seven days (including the time up the river to New Bern). If you have decent crew who can keep the boat moving eight to ten days is reasonable. Bad weather off Cape Hatteras could add a good bit of time -- figure five days if you decide to take the ICW from Norfolk south.

All that said it is a pretty nice run.

Thanks for the response. Obviously a good weather window would be a pre-requisite. We could always duck into the Chesapeake if conditions warrant. We are looking at a boat up there, so I am trying to get a handle on the logistics if we want to move forward with the acquisition.

My other thought is what would be the latest date we could consider leaving safely?

Sacrilege, I know. But, you could drop the mast and have a professional trucking company get her there in two days. Not sure if there is time pressure.

For all deliveries, mentally prepare for a 50% increase above the time it "should" take. If the crew is less than real pros, add more.

Not necessarily a bad idea. Also, you are planning on the very peak of hurricane season in what is predicted to be a very active hurricane year.

It all depends on whether they decided to take the "Scenic" route, i.e. around the world or the great circle ahla down the coast up the Mississippi River through the Great Lakes and so forth.
