Spoof?

As I am not a member of the Flying Scot Sailing Association, perhaps my user name and e-mail address were "lifted" from sailnet.com?

Hello Oomfh

You received the following message from: mrs2525 (EMAIL ADDRESS EDITED OUT BY MODERATORS)

At: Flying Scot Sailing Association

From Mrs.Hamidah Garwoski

Greetings In the name of God Almighty,

First of all, I seek your indulgence to solicit for your assistance concerning the content of my e-mail, although I am not comfortable discussing it through this manner, due to lots of unsolicited mails on the internet presently, but I have no other medium to do so right now since the situation of my health is deteriorating.

INTRODUCTION: I am Mrs.Hamidah Garwoski 63years-old; I am married to late Dr. Alexander Johnson Garwoski of blessed memory a citizen of Slovak Republic. Who was a reputable business magnet-(Oil Explorer) in United Kingdom for many years before He died of Heart Attack in the year 2007. We were married for Thirty-Five years with a child and our only son died in a ghastly motor accident last year 2009. I have been battling with both lung cancer and stroke.

My late husband deposited the sum of (Ł4.800.000.00) Four Million Eight Hundred Thousand British Pounds Sterling with a sucurity storage firm here in United Kingdom and my name as beneficiary of the funds. After his death I decided not to remarry or get a child outside my matrimonial home.
According to the doctor, my medical report shows a have very short life sperm due to my health status presently. Maybe I may still have another 1-3 months to live, that I do not know but God can say. That is just my faith as a deteriorating cancer patient. But I pray to God to heal me so that I will be alive and see this work done as my late husband instructed me.

Knowing my health condition I decided to donate the above mentioned funds to an individual Muslim/Christian or any faith, so that He/She will utilize this money the way I am going to instruct herein, I want an individual that will use this fund for the less privilege ones like; orphanages, widows, also help our old ones who is unable to cater for their needs. The Bible/Qur'an made us to understand that blessed is the hand that giveth.

I took this decision because our only son who is suppose to inherit this money and properties is also late and my husband relatives has possesses some of my late husband properties and left me almost nothing. I don't want my late husband's relatives to know about this development, I know if I ask them to use these funds for less privilege ones they will use it for their own vested/personal interest. I don't want a situation where this money will be used in such manner, this is why I am taking this decision, I know we have not meet before but I want you to consider this mission as DIVINE MISSION!!!

I am not afraid of death hence I know where I am going; I know that I am going to be in the bosom of the Lord. Exodus "14 VS 14" says that the lord will fight my case and I shall hold my peace.

I want you and your family to always pray for me because the lord is my shepherd, my happiness is that I lived a worthy life and whoever that wants to serve the God must serve him in spirit and truth. Please you are require to respond back to me immediately.

As soon as I receive your reply I shall give you more details regarding this great mission.

Remain blessed.

Yours Sister,

Mrs.Hamidah Garwoski

Typical Nigerian scam. Always use "AT" instead of @ when posting your address online.

Better yet, don't ever post your e-mail address on a public forum in machine readable form. Using something like:

honesty4u {at} btinternet {dot} com

would be the preferred format, if you have to post your e-mail address.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

One of the several versions of the "Nigerian Scam" letters. I have seen many versions, and this version gets a "C-" at best. The most convincing of the Nigerian Scam letters appears to originate from a foreign based attorney.

These scam letters generate millions of Dollars per year to criminals and criminal networks through ill gotten gains. There are people all over the US (and to a lesser point, the world) that participate in these scams, and get fleeced for up to hundreds of thousands of dollars each. I am sorry to say that I have a family relative that as a result of greed, lost his entire retirement (over $300,000) to a similar scam.

Unfortunately, this type of scam continues to contribute over 10% of Nigeria's GNP. So should you receive such a letter, make sure you educate those around you that this is a scam.

I'd point out that ANY UNSOLICITED e-mail offers of any type should be looked at very closely. Most are fraudulent in one way or another.

It is possible if you have your user name and email address in any post you've made on sailnet or your information is in the archived and accessible mailing lists that were retained and published on the Sailnet at the members requests.

Remember - any information you post here or on any website about yourself is public and can be used by unscrupulous people who want to spam you or masquerade as you.

Spammers have "scrapers" that constantly scrape online forums for email addresses, usernames, etc.

This is why we always warn people to never post their email address in any post.

We never make members email addresses available to anyone or any other member.

We take your privacy very seriously.

Seriously. When God can't get a decent withdrawal, it's time to legislate some oversight!

Ya'all got some gonads, busting up a Mission from The Good Lord like that. Poor rich business men in Nigeria are one thing.. angelic hosts of the Lord is a whole different matter.

I'm a little curious, though.. why would she still be married to the 'late' Dr Whatever? I mean, once he's dead... shouldn't that sort of be a signal it's time to not be married? I'm just saying, that's a whole new level of yuck, right there.

Also, it's probably a good thing she decided not to have more kids, since the doc gave her about 90 days before she's pushing up daises. That's a pretty short window to spawn out a couple more rugrats.

At least those relatives won't get it. After all, they got everything. Well, everything except, you know, FOUR AND A HALF MILLION!! But heck.. who's counting? Probably doesn't even dent the accounting records if it goes away, right? They'll never miss it.

I, for one, commend this poor young old lady for her love and compassion of orphanages and widows. Of course, if the widows kept the kids, maybe we wouldn't need... oh, never mind.

She sounds legit to me. I don't see how anything could possibly go wrong.

I can assure you that ALL of these letters are scams. Just block the sender. They originate either from Nigeria or Jamaica. In some cases, people that thought these were legitimate actually paid money ($thousands) and traveled internationally to pick up their "share". Some were held for ransom and if ransoms weren't paid, they were killed and dumped somewhere in Nigeria.

Very good advice, SD.

That said, am I the only one who finds a bit of entertainment value in these things? The grammar and spelling are always so bad that one has to question how anyone could be gullible enough to fall for it. Sadly, there must be a few suckers out there, or these things would have died out.

For a boring winter day, perhaps we could set up a separate thread for the bes Nigerian scams that we have seen. Just kidding!

BTW, if you're using an e-mail program, you can always view the RAW SOURCE. This will give you the complete header information, which will appear like this:

Pay attention to the lines that say:

These lines indicate, at least on most e-mails, the actual server that the e-mail originated at, and the sender's computer's IP address. Most spammers aren't smart enough to spoof IP addresses or mail servers, especially if the mail servers and addresses are in a country like Russia. The IP address 90.157.21.108 goes to an e-mail server in Ekatrinburg, Russia.

So the chance that this actually came from the e-mail address that it says it did is pretty slim.
