We don’t buy that American dream anymore either. I don’t know about selling an entire life, but we did sell our home and Ebayed all our stuff that was in it. Whatever wasn’t sold was given away. We then bought our dream boat and moved aboard with a goal of sailing away. Since I am order by the laws to pay child support, then I remain here working for now, but at least I get to do it from our boat.

Its probably not practical. But it sounds like a good idea.

I say forget "practical" because that is all relative anyway. I would do it if I had the guts. (Didn't the lion say that? Sort of anyway...)

Working towards that now...Got the house almost completed...Owned free and clear....Plan to cash out and sail the caribbean for at least the the winter...Then probably do it all over again...I buy the house no one wants and completely renovate it and retail it to a homeowner..One house at a time....Got a crew together now that I trust to get the job done with very little oversight on my part...As for selling the rest of your stuff...Try Craigs List.....it is Cheaper!

Fair Winds....

That is the American Dream. The Freedom to choose your lifestyle. The dream is not about a job, wife and 2 kids, house in the burbs. If that is your dream, it is just symbolic. The dream is freedom to do or be anything you want. So I say go for it. While you can certainly try by selling it as a package, you will get more money for it by parting it out. Achieving the true American Dream just requires the patience to work toward your end goal. Effectively you are retiring early which is all part of the dream.

Getting rid of STUFF is tough and I have never heard of anyone doing it in a single transaction.

I have done it twice and in both cases it took me 6 months with the house sale being in doubt to the last minute both times even though I was lucky and was selling in a good sellers market.

If you have an expensive car get shot asap and find an old banger that you can sell at the last minute. You will need a car [van is better] up until the minute you cast off to cruise. Small sob for Ermintrude who valiently carried me all over the UK at 55mph and was abandoned on the dock at Milford Haven with the docs inside, 3 days of MOT left and the keys in the ignition.

EBAY is your friend.

You have to decide how much time to devote to trying to sell stuff at flea markets - in the end it may not be worth the time and effort. Both times I visited charity shops with bundles of stuff at the last minute.

What the heck, you might try to sell the whole package on eBay or Craigslist - how would you price it? I recall some guy in Australia trying it once, right down to a trial period at his job and the intro to his friends, and he ended up with less $$ than expected. Or see if you can at least get someone who specializes in estate sales to get rid of the material possessions in one stroke - you pay a hefty percentage for this but OTOH, your time is worth something. Even if you have to part it out, go for it - we've been living aboard for 8 yrs, cruising for the last one, and realizing as you get further into this life, you value collecting experiences and friends far more than you value material things.
