Talking Free Stuff !!!

My Scottish heart is all a-twitter. Saltwater Suzi and I have always wanted a Kindle but have been much to frugal to buy one. (Operative word here may be 'cheap' but we prefer frugal.)

I discovered today on Amazon.com that they have a FREE download called Kindle for PC. Naturally I clicked on the button - (my ol' pappy tol' me, "If it's free - take it!). So the download went smoothly.

Then I discovered that there are many, many books for free from Amazon - lots of them Nautical books! And lots of classics, too.

And I discovered several sites with thousands of books, millions of books for free. And we already own a notebook computer which will be perfect. So we've got a free Kindle - sort of. And free books.

I have to go now - I believe I have stained my pants.

Online Book Catalog - Overview - Project Gutenberg
Not Kindle (or any other reader) specific, but a large collection of classics in several different formats all available for free.
A quiet read of some of the old classics I was supposed to have understood in high school has stood me in good stead.

Denise—

I am guessing that you can search for them in the Kindle app.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Yeah, I found a spot there that said 100 most popular with an index tab next to it that said top 100 free. You can also search nautical and put them in order from cheap to $$$ and the free ones come up first.

Free, man, darn near as good as rum!

odd selection

Larry and Suzi
You got me all excited so I went over to Amazon, down loaded their reader and started to look thru the free nautical stuff. Can't say that I was all that impressed but in retrospect, it is free, what should I expect. Nice (?) stuff from the CIA though. A collection of seemingly useless data about every country in the world.....

Not quite the same but if like me you like real books try the search engine alibris.com or .co.uk. in the UK.
They are a second hand book search engine and reseller.
Great thing is they are linked to second hand book stores across the US and UK and they charge a flat rate shipping charge whether the book is in Los Angeles or London!
They place a very small surcharge on origional dealers price But often the shipping rate-Ł2.75 here in the UK is far less than the dealers.
Just bought Jimmy Cornels book World Cruising for $5 including shipping-a 1992 edition BUT brand new and never opened.
Likewise Heavy Weather Sailing by Alard Coles this time an unread 40 year old edition for just over $11
