little help

I'm writing a story about 2 couple sailing around the world in a 39 foot catamaram. The last ocean going boat I was on was a Destroyer Tender in The Navy and my sail has been limited to lakes. My question is in open water what kind of speeds are we looking at? How many miles a day could they log.. with in reason. The character grew up sail and they are all able body seaman.... Let me know ... Thanks

They could be expected to log between 100 and 250 miles in any given day depending on the winds and currents, but something less than 150 miles per day would be a good average for a moderately fast cat, 100 per day in something more normal. While cats can hit some pretty high speeds in a decently high breeze, much of a circum-nav is done in moderate to light winds.

So it would be safe to say 17 days between the Cook Islands and New Zealand?
