While I wish her luck. Reality is, more boats get thru that area than get hijacked or equal. If you read fatty goodlanders article in a recent CW rag, he talks about how many of the boats ferry themselves thru. While ANY route in and around africa other than 500+ miles south would not be my 1st choice, if she plans accordingly, this route should not be too bad. Of course, if the pirates know a popular sailor is coming thru........... They may target her, but if she is in a pack that may be more of a hassle for them than not.

Laura indeed set sail today. She started in Gibraltar and is heading to the Canaries where she will wait till the Hurricane season is over.

Laura Dekker Sets Sail - Dutch teen slips quietly out of Portuguese port

At least she's keeping it somewhat low key...and not totally Sunderlanding it.

I'am curious about the boat she is using. I know it is a 38 ft ketch, but which design?

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

My sentiments exactly. However, like everyone else, I wish her a safe journey.

If you go HERE you can find info on the boat at the Jeanneau web page, Includes a 2 page brochure, and a 57 page owners manual in a word doc. The last 7 pages or so show the ketch option.

The Jeanneaus from this era were built a bit stronger per say than today. That is not to say a Jeanneau from today could not cross an ocean, as many have.
