Our 2010 Cruise (pics)
Hey all.. we've been away for nearly 6 weeks (anyone notice??  :) ) and happy to say we managed another great summer on the water. Slow to start with a cold spring, summer arrived with a vengeance in early July. We had only 3 days with any rain, and none of it steady. Some wind, some calm as is typical hereabouts but we actually had better sailing conditions in Desolation than usual (and more calms than normal further south). Record heat at times, and an invasion of smoke from interior forest fires marred a few days here and there. The smoke haze did do some amazing things for the sunsets, though!

Our approximate routing below:

Our itinerary included the Gulf Islands, Jervis Inlet and Malaspina strait, Jedidiah and Hornby Islands. Comox and its music festivals held us for a few days, after which we meandered up into Desolation - Copeland Is, Tenedos Bay, Pendrell Sound, Walsh cove, Cortez Bay, Squirrel Cove, Teakerne Arm, Von Donop, Gorge Harbour, Heriot Bay, - all the usual haunts.

We managed to spinnaker north up Malaspina one day, and again in the opposite direction the next.

A highlight of our stop at Vananda, Texada Is, was a swim in an abandoned Limerock quarry

This beautiful morning on Gunboat Bay, Pender Hrbr gave way to Sabot wars a little later on!

Some days we had a breeze, others not!

Smoke was an issue for a while, but it made for some different sunsets..

A snug anchorage at Jedidiah, and a typical Gulf Yacht Club raft-up at Cougar Island:

Hornby Island's Tribune Bay, and a remarkable piece of driftwood

Sun setting on the anchorage at Newcastle Island, Nanaimo center distant.

And now it's back to the grind...

Great photos!! The PacNW has to be one of, if not the most beautiful cruising grounds in the world! I hope you realize how fortunate you are to have them at your doorstep, and to have so much time to enjoy them.:)

Glad you had a wonderful trip, and happy to have you back. - JRP

Thanks, everyone... some more?

One of our guests is a cook on the "Island Roamer" or "Island Odyssey", a pair of 68 foot ketches doing the Queen Charlottes (Haida Gwai) and Alaska excursion charters. As a result we at pretty well, with full marks for presentation as well!

Here's a nice tranquil shot of Squirrel Cove, a popular anchorage that can probably hold 100 boats on a busy day...

And from another favourite, Jedidiah Island, a shot of the Homestead, followed by "Home Bay", the obviously named "Driftwood Bay" and one of the anchorages "Codfish Bay"

Oh - and for a look at some Hornby Island sandstone formations look here:

Got to say I loved the picture of Gunboat Bay the most, but they were all good.. Looks like a great trip!

Welcome back Ron and Eleanor,

We took the dink into Gunboat Bay this summer. The chart showed a rock on the way in that we were a little worried about and wanted to scout it out.

That Limestone Quarry on Texada looks cool. Was it a walk to get there?
