Boat Naming Convention on Transom

Hello Fellow sailors,

First of all, Apologies if it has been asked before.

I would appreciate if some of you could help me with a question regarding naming convention for sailboats. I purchased a 34 footer a few months ago and I'm about to get my lettering re-done on my boat, which is currently anchored in Yucalpeten, Yucatan, Mexico.

The boat is currently on temporary import visa until 2014, and is a Canadian Registered Boat.

Back in Canada and the United States, I've noticed that most boats will display only the city name, or most common: City, State/Province abbreviation.

Is it common for boats to have the country under the name?

For example, my boat name is Serenity.

Could I have:

Serenity
Montreal, Canada

Or should I stick with Montreal, QC.

I'm not sure if there's a specific naming rule that I should follow. I'm pretty sure Mexican authorities won't give a damn, hell I've one side of my boat without the registration number and pass in front of the immigration twice a week, but I would prefer following the proper method if there's one.

Thanks for your help

You will want to check with the proper authorities in the country that you will be registering the vessel in. I do know in the USA if you document a vessel there is a standard of size and placement of the lettering especially the port of call. I don't want to quote it, but if you Google it you will get the details.

In Canada there are only a limited number of ports of call that you can use. For example all boats registered in Alberta have Edmonton as there home port. If your boat is registered in Montreal, that is all you need. You can add QC if you wish but Montreal is all you are required to have. No need to put Canada as your flag says that. On Canadian registered boats he lettering has to be a 10 cm in height and in clearly legible letters of Latin or Arabic or Roman numerals. Although not required for pleasure craft it's a good idea to have the name on the sides as well.
