What to look for in a used boat

Hi Folks,

I've got a lead on a crazy-affordable Oday Javelin, which I think would be perfect for me and my lady to learn on.

It looks to be closer to the 80s in year than the 60s (no mahogany, all glass; sealed bow rather than shelf, etc.), and I thought you guys might be able to spot me some advice on what to poke, prod and look for in a 14 foot fiberglass dinghy. If there's anything javelin specific (squishy transom, etc), I'd love to hear that too.

I'd recommend you read the Boat Inspection Trip Tips thread I started, as it will help you determine whether the boat is worth looking at, but a lot of it won't be applicable to a daysailer like the Javelin.

The transom is cored and needs to be checked for water intrusion or it will be squishy. The floatation on these boats was styrofoam and it needs to be checked to see if it has all crumbled away or not. Centerboard pivot pin is another possible problem area as is the mast step inside the forward cuddy.

The hull is solid glass IIRC, and should be pretty bulletproof.

The rudder and tiller assembly needs to be checked. The older ones were wood. BTW, drmarine.com in Massachusetts has parts for the boat.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Thanks for the tips, SailingDog! Definitely some good stuff out on that thread, even for us wannabe dinghy sailors.
