Orca pics

Had a close encounter with the PNW resident Orcas this September in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It was one of the calmest days I've seen in the strait and there must have been close to 100 orcas within a square mile or so. My father and brother and I were out for a short trip and happened upon the whales as we were motoring around the west and south of San Juan Island on our way to Cattle Pass and then to Friday Harbor.
Here are a few of the MANY pics we took.

A nice group of two females and two young ones

Dad at the bow as a group of whales passes under him and continue on their way

just to show that it's not always sunny and calm, this was the next day heading home to Blakely Island with 25-30 knots true under reefed main and staysail

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Great photos John!

Wow, it must have been amazing to be so close to so many Orcas! We had a sighting in September as well, just a little bit north of you in the Gulf Islands, but it was a little more distant, and only one Orca.

That's Mt. Baker in the background.

(I hope I'm not hijacking this thread by adding my photo...)
