Tornado and Boats...

Check out this video:

Video - Breaking News Videos from CNN.com

If anyone had been in that trailer, they were killed. It took about one second and the entire trailer literally just vanished! Unbelieveable and Scary stuff.

You know, I have always wondered how a boat would do in a tornado. Seems like it might be safer than a house in some respects (and certainly a mobile home). I seriously doubt a boat would get picked up out of the water and thrown (a large cruising/sailing boat) since we show so little windage. Worst case scenario it seems to me is that you get rolled a few times, but I bet most boats would stay afloat.

Seems like I saw a video once of a waterspout hitting a sailboat... but have not seen it for a long time.

Thoughts? Anyone hit my a waterspout or close?

We have had several in harbor waterspouts in the oyster bay to Northport area that missed by way to littel in 2008 were as the norm would have been out in the middle of the LI sound

The golf ball size hail did some machine gun work on any dodgers that were up

The last one jumped all the boats and went into town and picked up and crushed a dock and various house stuff

In 2010 they beat up NYC more

Tornado Wind Speeds;

F0: 40-72mph
F1: 73-112mph
F2: 113-157mph
F3: 158-206mph
F4: 207-260mph
F5: 216-318mph
F6: 319-379mph

Most tornado's, on land, are in the F0 - F1 range with the occasional F2 - F3. There are the rare F4 or F5, we had a F4 I believe in MN this past year. Not sure how well one's boat would fare against the F1 & higher speeds. Concentrated spinning winds also.

True water spouts (not from a thunder storm) have winds of 60-120 mph, are narrower, and slower than tornados. I think an F4 and above might launch almost any boat.

These guys get surrounded by a waterspouts toward the end of the film - and one of the chicks reads the definitions and varying severity of waterspouts versus tornados. Interesting stuff actually.
