Question Please recommend marina or yachtclub in Toronto?

Hi All,

New to this so any help appreciated. Does anyone know of a marina or yachtclub in the Toronto area that has a slip available for a 36 footer?

I am shopping for a boat and need somewhere to dock it after the purchase. I keep hearing that there are massive waiting lists for slips.

Is there anything I should specifically look for in a marina/club?

Thank you,

Regards,

e

I would suggest putting the boat up on the hard over the winter. Slips are brutal to find. The CYA web site (Canadian Yachting Association) was a list of Ontario/Toronto area yacht clubs.

Thank you so much!

Thank you Jack. A great resource. I hope I can find a slip.

In the summer can you just weigh anchor somewhere and sidle on up to a marina only when you need fuel or water etc? Given that it was safe to do so.

I know, you're saying how crazy is this guy? I'm just curious.

Tx's,

You are welcome. I know of no good anchorages in the Toronto area. There may be mooring field / grounds further afield.

Another option is to buy a boat with moorage. Check Yachtworld.com or contact some local brokers.

Ontario Marine Operators Association has an interactive map listing the marinas all along the Lake Ontario shores.

There is nowhere protected enough to anchor out in the Toronto area that I know of. Some have mooring field, but still a fee. May check out some of the clubs where you put in work hours for cheaper rates.

Very Spiffy Map!

Scottbr thank you for this resource. I was looking at the google satelite maps and was thinking that there is not much protected shoreline.

Notwithstanding I'm hoping I can find a marina/club that has slips available.

Is there the newspaper equivalent of an apartments for rent section that lists marina/club slip vacancies in the boating world?

Tx's

If you intend to sail for more than a year or so your best bet is to join a club. There are many self help clubs in Toronto and, in the long run, they are much cheaper than marinas. Also you will find a lot of helpful sailors in a club. I would pick one based on where you live in Toronto and whether you want to race a lot or cruise.

Not that I've heard of, but that's not to say it doesn't exist. I think the best method is look for the area you want to locate and start calling. It may come down to only a few phone calls once you look at location, cost etc.

There are lots o temporary anchorages available behind the Toronto Islands but I don't know about long term situations. Hanlon's Point is an example. The Island Yacht Club seems to have open slips as they are rebuilding after a fire several years ago. Alexandra is a charming self help club. Then there are some really rural clubs out on the Leslie Spit but thats a bit of a haul from the city. 36ft is a bit big to just pick up a slip without a wait...at our club in Niagara that might take several years (we have had some people wait 10 yrs.) Better check with the broker selling you the boat and see if he can leverage a deal.(You are using a broker are you not)?

POne more thing

Oh and one other resource I forgot to mention. Get your hands on a GAM Magazine. Clubs with openings advertise in this really excellent publication.
