The cost of rescue..

For some reason I got to thinking..

After reading accounts of people being rescued at sea by passing freighters, etc, is there a cost to you, the rescue-e associated with that? I.e. a charge to offset costs associated with late delivery due to diversion, food you eat on board, etc? And if you're insured, does insurance cover this?

Just one of those "I wonder... " questions..

Under international law, skippers of vessels are required to come the assistance of mariners. Rescue is free; towing is not.

Freighters

Vessels in the area of your distress are required to respond.

I doubt if they would divert to another port for your convieniance. If they're headed for Hong Kong, so are you.

They might charge you for meals, but it would be reasonable.

My boat insurance doesn't have a "rescuer reimbursement" clause, so I would bet that you'ld be on your own.

Good stuff.. I know that you're more than likely stuck going to their destination, and wouldn't expect otherwise..

Thanks, it's good to have filed in the back of my head..

A quick soapbox.....

I'm consistently dismayed that non-boaters harp on the cost of rescue yet they think nothing of calling 911 or the Forest Service for a hiker. No one asked how much it cost to rescue the airplane in the Hudson and that was a commercial flight. We rescue because we're human beings and it's the right thing to do. We explore and invent because we're human. If we didn't we'd still be living in caves and walking everywhere.

Ok. Off the soapbox. Sorry to hijack the thread. Feel better now

No worries Sabreman.. it's a point I routinely make to people who have difficulty accepting what I want to do and harp on the rescue issue, although I usually use the example of a car crash where 911 is involved. Of course, then I get the "but that's *different*.. you don't HAVE to go sailing".. to which a quick response of "you don't HAVE to drive your car" usually shuts them up. Always a fun time

Along the same line in rescuing. When the CG has only one plane and there are two boats in distress with an equal distance, urgency and everything. An old man in one boat and a beautiful young blonde is on the other, who will get rescue? I hate to be the one to make that decision.

But if I were the old man. Heck go ahead rescue the blonde, I had my share of fun already.

RockDawg - I think the blonde would have had her share of fun already too

I'd say ignore the person with the nicer boat, and go back and salvage it later after they've fallen overboard

go rescue the blonde THEN COME GET ME, IM NOT DEAD YET!!

I did wonder about the 'charging for provisions' as while im obligated to save a guy, he can eat on his own dime... but heck i would probably feed him for free, especially if he just watched his boat go down--then id even break out the good stuff!
