How long?

Does anyone know how long it would take to sail to Florida from Galveston bay? This will be mine and my wife's first long trip. I have'nt decided yet if we are going to sail the coast or the ICW. We will be taking the trip on a Chrsler 22' and we are planing to go March 11 and return ???.
I would appriciate any input or advice. I am still a newbie sailor, but we are sailing every weekend to develop or skill sets.

Thank you,
Joey

Florida is a big state...if your coming from Galveston then Pensacola,FL is alot shorter distance than if your headed to Jacksonville. Either way..not sure exactly... but it will likely seem like a long time if you are newbies and your sailing and sleeping in a boat that size ..at least it will seem long once she starts complaining...I would say to get to South Florida figure in a month or 6 weeks minimum if you want to take your time and grab a motel here and there to get away from the boat once in a while which you will probably want to do as it is nearing winter as well...if you want to just get from point A to point B and just want to slog thru a hellfest taking turns at the helm you could do it in half that time probably...You got to be more specific though man...

If a dirty bottom slows you down what do you think it does to your boat

Don't let that flat water fool you. You'd do well to stick to the ICW in something that size, plus, if it gets to be too much, you're much closer to a friendly harbor.

Joey,

Continue to hone your skills on the water, and take some charts home to do some basic navigation practice. It's just math -- as in "distance divided by speed" -- just like those pesky algebra problems we all hated in school.

As others have said, at this point I'd recommend you first consider maximizing the ICW as your primary route. The Gulf is a fickle body of water: it can be calm and gentle; it can also be a real be-atch if you catch her wrong. And you don't want to catch her wrong in a Chrysler 22.

This is good advice..I didnt really mean point A to B as in freakin' Point A Galveston to freakin' Point B Key West or anything..I gotta be more careful sorry...

It took a friend more than 10 days on his Tartan 41. Uh, I just did the Harvest Moon Regatta. Don't think it would be any fun on a 22' anything. The video was us on a Pacific Seacraft 37 on Friday morning. It picked up considerably later. And, it gets way worse at times. You would need a really big window for weather.

On the other hand, I moved my boat from Kemah to Port Aransas last January and followed the same path as the Harvest Moon Regatta. We had 2 kn winds on the nose for most of the trip and glass calm water. We had to motor all but the last 2 hours of the trip. We picked a two day weather window that big winds on either side.

True, you may find yourself motoring for long periods. Carry lots of fuel.
