A voyage for madmen

If you have not read Peter Nichols's "a voyage for madmen", I highly recommend it. I found this documentary about the same disastrous 1968 round-the-world yacht race.

I read the book, and happened to watch DeepWater last night (Netflix).

I enjoyed the book, but the movie.... maybe 3 stars. (IMHO)

I ended up feeling sorry for Crowhurst due to his failures - especially in his family's eyes.

Moitessier is obviously an extreme version of a loner, but a very capable sailor!

Great book, though.

Agreed on all sides. The book was an amazing third person account of the race, touching on the story of all racers involved. The movie is a doc focused more on Crowhursts depressing story. So depressing, it is sometimes hard to watch. I did really enjoy the archive footage taken from a few of the boats during the race. Incredible shots of the southern seas and around the horn.

Fantastic book, and this film was a good "supplement" to it. I enjoyed seeing footage of the yachts in the race. Yes, a depressing story, but I thought this was a great documentary, and thank you for sharing.

John Ridgeway's Golden Globe boat "English Rose III" is still afloat in the loch below his cottage. "Suhalii" spent time in a museum but she is now back on the water.

English Rose III

Many years ago (about 40) I spent two weeks at John Ridgeways adventure school, the high point for me was spending a day with the great man sailing ER III round Handa Island The boat he row across the Atlantic, English Rose II is also at his house.

Great book, i'm also reading "The Long Way" by Moutessier and just purchased Robin's book "A world of my own". Deepwater was indeed depressing.

There is no doubt that Joshua was the best boat out there for that race! Moutessier is the man!

Another great Peter Nichols book is "Sea Change", it's about his trans atlantic trip he made.

"Sea change" is available at BN or amazon. The others are free to all below. I haven't read either but starting one today. Which one first LL66c?

"The long way"

"A world of my own"
