Houston, Texas boat tax?

I am trying to purchase a 83 Crealock 37 in Houston and then having it shipped over land to Virginia. Will I have to pay tax in Texas? What's the rate?

You really should google the Texas revenue department or ask a pro in Texas. Most states have a provision that you are not required to pay their sales taxes if you meet certain criteria, such as living elsewhere and removing the boat within a defined period. Those criteria are different by state.

However, the state where you are shipping it to may very possibly have a use tax, which is just sales tax imposed on something you buy elsewhere, ship in, and use in their state. The rate is typically the same as the sales tax rate, which is not a coincidence. Some states have reciprocity agreements, where they credit each others sales taxes or only require you to pay the difference, if theirs is higher and you paid another state already.

Big caution. States are broke and looking for revenue. This is an easy one for them to hunt you down if you do it wrong.

Texas Parks and Wildlife are who handle boat titles and things.

No, if you are moving the boat out of state you do not need to pay sales tax in Texas. If the boat is state registered you can obtain a new title in your home state. If it is Coast Guard documented the Feds don't collect sales tax anyway, but TX does require that you pay sales tax if you were to keep the boat in TX.

Keep in mind that USCG registration (documenting) will have no impact on sales tax in Texas or use tax in your home state. The state tax rules apply whether you title in their state or not. Some even require that you register your boat in the state, even if it is USCG documented, but you don't have to display hull numbers.
