Rigging question

When buying things like shrouds, turnbuckles, etc, how do you calculate the working load things like standing rigging should be able to take? Hull weight?

Basically you buy the same size that came with the boat. 1/4' shroud would have a 1/4" turnbuckle etc.

One of my boats has a cable shroud that you lash to the deck with a rope. I'm trying to get rid of that.

On my boat the standing rigging has a tensile breaking strength that is about equal to the boat's displacement. Safe Working Load's are typically around 25% of the breaking load. So -- if my boat is representative -- I would size your new rigging components to have working strengths equal to 1/4 of the boat's displacement.

You could also look at the existing cable shroud that you are trying to replace, figure out what type of cable it is, look up the strength of that size cable in that type of material, and then size your new components accordingly.
