Recycling Sails

Hey everyone! Always loved sailing, first time joining this group. More on me at the bottom, but first my humble request for the community:

Does anyone have ripped, unwanted or old sails they'd like to donate to me? You or your company would be (very) gratefully listed as a sponsor. I'm entering a very public/prominent design competition on Governor's Island (City of Dreams, FIGMENT project) in New York to create a summer pavilion for concerts and general public fun.

The goal is to reuse or repurpose where possible, and I want to give new life to a sail by turning it into a public interactive art installation where kids (or any New Yorker) can come and draw, paint, etc. on the canvas. I'm also repurposing wood palettes (from behind Target, grocery stores, etc.) to create the structure and form frames to wrap the sail around. At the end, leftover sail/canvas frames will be donated to (ideally) schools and children throughout the city who don't have the budget for art or painting surfaces.

Thanks for reading and hope to hear back from some of you! I would really appreciate any help, even if it's just a contact that I could get in touch with or a direction to look in.

----

I'm a graduate architecture student at Columbia, just learning and trying to do something good for my city (which, for those of you who've been, is really lacking in public art; Philly has us beat tenfold).

nice you want to beautify the city. you check out christos umbrellas? anyway, while i dont have one to donate, you may want to contact sail manufacturers as well. they may have some pretty good sized remenants that may go to waste otherwise. here is a decent directory:

Sailmakers in The International Marine Directory - Sailing Networks

good luck

Great to hear. My team is submitting to the competition by 2/1 and we'll wait to hear if we move on to the finals and whether we need to acquire the materials.

Thank you!
