Hi y'all,
I recently purchased a boat and I'm spending a few weeks on her fixing her up before I prepare to move it (by truck). I am going to have her properly decommissioned / recommissioned by a professional rigger, but I do want to sail her before I move her.
One of the major issues that came out of the survey was improper mast tuning. The masthead is forward of the mast butt, which is an unstable orientation. The baby stay is broken (was replaced by dyneema for some reason) and the backstay tension is too light.
Today I thought I would play around with getting it tuned properly and have a slight rake aft. Before I go and screw something up, I thought I would check and see if you guys could point me in the right direction. Lateral orientation is fine, shrouds all seem to have adequate tension.
So... steps to achieve better tuning... are?
Here's what I've done so far... I've gone easy and only done a few turns on each turnbuckle (and haven't seen any resulting change)
1. Released tension on the forestay (furler) so the Mast can move back freely
2. Tightened the turnbuckle on the baby-stay... it was just flapping in the wind (the dyneema will be replaced when I recommission her) I figured this would hold the mid-mast in place to allow me to move the masthead aft.
3. Tightened the turnbuckle on the backstays... how much is too much tension?
4. Ate lunch (PB&J) and posted on Sailnet, moved on to another project until I get some input.
