i second dave, pre paid can be a deal... can be, but a 100 for 1000 mins is not. the only good thing with that plan is it carries over, so if you use less than 100 mins a month its good as it will carry you for 10 months or more.

i pay 40 bucks for unlimited 3g internet on an android phone with 1200 mins. actual i will be shortly, right now i am with straightalk, i pay 30 for 1000 mins, and 100 megs of internet, or 45 for unlimited both. i am changing to virgin mobile due to the phone ( android ) and the internet.

edit dave, is that total bill or just the price before the extra fees?

and i guess this is your first post from the phone, or you have been drinking a lot.

like i said virgin mobile if you use a lot of data, all their plans are unlimited data. the worse thing about 4g is it will allow you to load a page faster, which means more data usage. 3g is fine for me, allows unbuffered video streaming.

25 for 300 mins
40 for 1200 min
60 unlimited

the optimus phone is a really good phone, not the newest and greatest but for 150 i will take it.

i still dont understand the people who pay close to 100 a month for a cell phone. my parents pay about 240 for 2 phones, and a cell modem. they get the 10 bucks for the second line, but them have to pay 30 per phone for data. they also only have 900 mins shared.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

ok sounds like there is a lot of options out there for phones, we plan to use Skype for long distance, it is just the local minutes and being portable that we need a cell phone, right now I am behind the times, I dont text, dont twitter, not much of a facebook guy, so the smartphone is a gadget to me....
will go and have a look around the next time I am in the US. and the mean time will look at the phone guys at the flea markets for a cheap unlocked GSM phone.

"and the mean time will look at the phone guys at the flea markets for a cheap unlocked GSM phone."
Some of the cheal TMob prepaid phones sellfor $10-15 in the drug stores. That's GSM and you should be able to get them unlocked, or buy an unlocked phone for not more than that.
But those are basic "phone and text" phones.

If you plan to use Skype, remember that a more expensive "smart phone" with WiFi, using Andoird or another OS with Skype on it, can also become your Skype phone. So you can make a skype call from just your phone, and not need to drag the computer along with you in case the wifi doesn't reach your anchorage.

When you're in no rush, there are plenty of cheap used phones out there.
