Uscg Aux

Just wondered how many of you are in the USCG Aux.? If you are, do you like it? are there benefits to membership? How are the classes?

I have taken classes by both USCG aux and USPS. USPS is a little more sail oriented while USCG Aux seemed to be more powerboat. At least in southern Maine.

I joined the USCG AUX for the purpose of camaraderie and nautical knowledge quite some time ago. Put in a lot of study effort and commitment. Found out I could not fit in very well. The reason why I finally quit was the fact that if a boat is in distress right in front of you, but not in danger of sinking, and there were no injuries, we were NOT permitted to offer a tow because that would take business away from Tow Boat US et al.
I subsequently joined the US Power Squadron and earned the grade of Navigator.
Now there I was able to make many life long friends.

a friend of mine is in coast guard aux. and gets military discounts at the local ski resorts, is able to fly missions for the CG and doesn't have to pay for the gas in his plane, he got one of those cool gumby suits from the CG after attending training in FLA and he doesnt even own a boat.
