This will continue ad nauseum until civilized governments discover the 'backbone' to stop and put a complete end to this.

Until then lets all just continue to sing "Kumbaya".

Any word on how the're doing now? Any hope of ransom or rescue?

I think there must have been a translation except in very few instances, yachts aren't ships.

But the real situation at hand is that the somali pirates are extending their range both in terms of distance and types of vessels captured.

And the fact that they're now holding kids as hostage is despicable.

The key word in all this new piracy is: SOMALIA. It's not Kenyan piracy or Yemani piracy or Madagascar is SOMALIA.

So why does the UN not form a joint-effort and take over Somalia? Make that counry an example of what happens to pirates.

I am about the last person to ever call for military action, but this Somalia piracy is getting ridiculous.

I recntly read that one of the three major somalian powers has started a small "coast guard" to discourage pirates from operating out of their village harbors. But as of right now UN red tape prevents them from obtaining ships or supplies, or even seized engines from other pirate skiffs.

Send in the Marines. Don't hear about Barbary pirates any longer. Go in destroy everything that floats and out. Only kill as needed to destroy boats. Low risk to personnel., low collateral damage, no country building. Do it repetiively if necessary. Have UN signatories to law of the sea take turns. Hard to be a pirate without a boat.

Re: Danish Sailing Vessel taken by pirates
NY Times article today (May 14, 2013, page A4) says piracy in Indian Ocean has decreased markedly over the past 18 months due to international forces on patrol. Only 5 ships were taken last year, and none (so far) this year. This compares to 47 ships taken in 2010. The article describes how the bookkeeper, responsible for dividing up the ransom paid for a German ship three years ago, was arrested in Germany last Wednesday. He faces 5 to 15 years in prison on charges of "kidnapping and grievous bodily harm", since the captive crew was tortured by the pirates. Though hopefully a thing of the past, pirates are still being tracked down. Justice can be slow, but it is inexorable.
