What do you guys think about a blue water sailboat rigged with galvanized shrouds and stays? My Idea is to replace old SS stays/shrouds with galvanized wirer that have the equivalent breaking strength of a oversize SS wirer for a given yacht.
example: Replace 1/4 SS wirer (breaking strength 8200 lbs) with 5/16 7x7 galvanized plow steel wire (breaking strength 10100 lbs). 5/16 galvanized wirer has the same breaking strength as 9/32 SS wirer which is one size bigger than 1/4.
I would do the same thing with the turn buckle.
So it would be cheaper and stronger that way than replacing your old standing rigging with new SS wirer.
Other than looks, windage and weight anybody see any draw back?
But if you are stepping back, why not go back a couple of centuries and use fiber stays & shrouds. Instead of tarred Manila, use spectra 800 or 900. They are now manufacturing shrouds now from spectra. you save humongus weight aloft and the shrouds will just as strong as SS rigging, if not stronger. You should investigate the avantages and disavantages in the costs, life expectency of the modern shrouds using spectra.
This is food for thought.
It seems that bronze is the ultimate boat metal. Why is the standing rigging not made of bronze wire? Also wouldn't bronze tangs be better than stainless and bronze bolts to hold things together? If all were bronze, crevice corrosion would not be a problem.
The problem tends to be finding fittings to use with the galvanized wire i just did all new 316SS on a 29' for a bit over 1K
And thats 9 brand new turnbuckels
