Safe Boat

What is a good safe size and type boat for open ocean sailing?

Drop the line below into a google search and it will bring back many discussions on this topic. Your question is essentially impossible to answer. People have rowed across the ocean, but that doesn't mean I would do it.

Jeanneau 54DS

In the harsh marine environment, something is always in need of repair. Margaritas fix everything.

Lets see one for an example: Jessica Watson's boat the "Pink Lady" an S/S 34 design a few decades ago.
That boat was knocked down several times, turned over a few times and yet it just kept on sailing.
And there are many other boats that have that happened to them. So a full keel, low aspect rig if designed right. High aspect rigs are good also.
But IMO the cantilever keel with lead mines at the bottom of them are dangerous...Remember that is IMO for me.

Ditto!!!!

This comes from training & experience. And each time you take your boat out you are gaining experience... Now for the training;
Take along someone who can help you.
Read every book on sailboats that you can get your hands on.
Take courses.
Teach others; It really helps you learn, when you have to stop and think on how to explain whatever you are doing to someone else, so that they comprehend the gist of it completely.

hmmm...

Well the cliff notes version that I've seen around boils down it this.

1. 75% sailor
2. 15% time of year and place
3. 10% boat

The Titanic was a "safe" boat, hence back to the people(sailor), weather (time) and vessel knowledge/know how.
There were 300 ft boats that foundered in Lake Michigan within a couple of miles from shore on an inland lake and there were 16ft boats that crossed the Atlantic. I wouldn't even look at anything under 40ft (12m).
