Okay for radio?

Is it okay to power up my new radio without having an antenna attached? I want to check my wiring, and to make sure that the radio in fact works. I know I will not be able to actually receive anything. But is it harmful?

Thanks.

Just to elaborate on what Joe said If you Key the mike without an antenna or some appropiate load connected you WILL burn out the output power amp transistor.
