Realistic Quote or Not
 
I got a quote from the marina folks for replacing a thru-hull for the engine in-take.

The in-take is currently a strainer thru-hull 1/2". I am switching over to a 3/4" thru-hull with a proper seacock. I already have removed the thru-hull, so there is just the old hole in the boat now.

The yard wants $1380 to do the job. I think this is excessive, but wanted to get others opinions. The labor rate is $75/h. They are estimating 16 h or labor and $300 in parts/materials.

That seems real high. If you already removed the old one, why not just put the new one in yourself? I have done it my self and the hard part is removing the old one.

Excessive. Unless there are factors making the replacement particularly difficult it shouldn't be more than 2-3 hours labor. $300 for a new through-hull seems a bit pricey as well (how far is it from your engine to the through-hull?).

Seems as if they are using what is known as a "Flat Rate Book" and are not pro-rating the quote.
Remembering this lesson taught to me by a friend who was a mechanic at a gas station in the pass century. :rolleyes:

First - I thought it was excessive, but just wanted to get a another set of opinions.

Second - I am willing to do it myself, but the hard part is enlarging the hole, I don't have a hole saw for that and since the 1/2" hole already there isn't much smaller than a 3/4", I would probably need to epoxy a plug in to redrill the hole. I may have them do that, since the only time I can work on the boat is the W/E and typically the W/E weather has been lousy.

Engine is about 1 foot from the thru-hull location. There is also plenty of room for the seacock and no dimensional limitations. The inside of the hull is very flat and clean for bonding the seacock flange or flange block.

I can do the rest myself, but am kind of strapped for time and the weather has been lousy here in New England for Bonding/FG work. If the cost was say $700, I'd have no problem with it, but $1380 for it seems excessive, especially since the old thru-hull is removed.

You can enlarge the hole with a hole saw. but first you need to make or get a round plug in the old hole so the new hole saw will stay centered. Hole saws are cheap, you can plug the hole with piec from tapered plug that would be hopefully in your emergency supplies.

It seems absurdly high to me, however it is one of those jobs that can quickly sink your boat if not done correctly so if you don't have the skills to properly do it yourself, it might be worth it to have someone else do it.

If you search here for Mainesail's posts he has a great tutorial on how to do it correctly on his web page.

IF you have a portable drill you can acquire a hole saw at Ace hardware store.
1st cut a 1/2" plug. Then place that plug in the 3/4" hole saw, this will keep it centered.
Now you can enlarge the hole.Then with a new backing plate on the inside you can install your new thru-hull valve.
There are some other steps. But this is the gist of the procedures.

Excellent suggestion from Boasun. Holesaws aren't really that expensive, and nice to have in the old toolbox.
