Shortcut to 6 pac?

ok, well, not a shortcut experience wise, but time wise. I''m thinking of taking some time off work, getting my Z card, and doing merchant marine for a year to get up on sea days. I know I need to have a sufficient quantity applicable to what I''ll be doing (near coastal, sailing) to get it, but some time can be counted from shipping lines right?

Also does anyone have any good resources for 6 pac study, sail endorsments, or first hand Merchant Marine experience?
