It is Captain Mark, not Mister!!

Submitted my license renewal March 3rd 2010 a tad over a year ago. After going round and round with the Medical Exam Board for a few months then having to take STCW again. This is were I broke my ankle Oct. 5th 2010 which stopped the STCW training until January of this year. Pass that only after they tried to drown me about 5 times in water survival portion of the training. Then came the exams; After two go arounds with out of date books and change of Maritime Laws.... Passed with a 94%. minimum for passing is 90% for my level of licensing.

Today I got the Email from USCG National Maritime Center. They issued the New credentials and will have them in hand in a weeks time. Its coming by snail mail.

1600 ton Master (domestic) 3000 tonnage (ITC) Upon Oceans
2nd Mate any tonnage of Steam or Motor Vessels Upon Oceans.
Able seaman
Lifeboatman
ARPA Radar & GMDSS Radio license.

This was no mean feat for a slightly older Sailor (70). Been sailing since summer of '58 and that was a day or two ago...Retire from the Navy Jan '79, USCG Licensed since Feb '79.

Did you know that they refused to change my birth date from 1940 t0 1980. The rat finks...

So I guess that you younger WhipperSnappers working hard can acquire your own licenses.

I'm just love that you still use the phrase "rat finks". That slang really needs to come back around. Good stuff.

Congrats to you Boasun. Explain the US system for me. Is USCG licence the same as RYA Yachtmaster. I presume levels above that are more commercial oriented ? Unless of course you are thinking of buying the Maltese Falcon.

You can use a USCG license for operating a yacht. And if you do it as paid crew you would need one. But to work as a Mate/Master commercially you need to have the USCG License with the proper tonnage and endorsements in order to work that particular class of vessels.
