sorry LandLocked

You can do everything correct and one vendor that has your info can make it all a moot point...from then on...

just this week an outfit, Epsilon - they just send email for clients of B&A, grocery chains and the like lost control and although it was "only email and your name" - seems to me that is all they need to spam you or phish you...

At least once a week this happens, many do not have to report, as the breach may have affected ONLY 100's of thousands....and the threshold to report may be millions, or their industry is not subject to the reporting laws.

Internet fraud is growing exponentially everyday. I blame no one for protecting their identity inside completely unregulated forums. That said, you can retain anonymity from the bad guys and still give some relevant info, such as your broad location on the planet.

I, for example, identify where I sail, not where I live.

Some internet sleuths can find you even if all you list is a city. You're not as anonymous as you think you are. There are people with nothing but time and can really dig up some details. It's a running joke on another forum I've been on-piss off the wrong people and your first warning is in the form of a note taped to your front door (no, I haven't experienced that ).

So no, it's not paranoia.

I normally put my general info in profiles. Most often for city I use the nearest large city, because I live in a small town that most people have never heard of. For all intents and purposes, it's no longer really a town and the name only exists on signs placed on old abandoned tracks, and the deed to my house

Must run in the family because my brother's garage in Virginia was the original post office/general store for a town that sometime in the 20s was moved up the road 5 miles. (the town was moved, not the post office) but everyone knows where that place is, just don't try to get directions to the 'new' town.

I am a sys admin so I know all about what happens day to day. Absolutely, you are only as secure as the weakest piece of hardware/software that's connected to the net. Let me qualify with, I was talking about on a personal level/regular user, take steps to do things "you" can control.

If you want to see how much of your personal info is out there take a look at Spokeo People Search | White Pages | Find People.

Look for the 'User CP' (Control panel) on one of the upper menu bars on the page when you're logged in.

Hey! Just because I'm paranoid it doesn't mean they aren't really out to get me.

If someone here wants to know where I am and how to get a hold of me, PM's are fine. I never fill out extra info for anything on the internet. Those who knows knows, and those who don't knows, don't knows.
