Oregon Inlet and the Bonner Bridge clearance

I am planning a trip down the Chesapeak and into the Pamlico sound. I have a 64.5 bridge clearance and a 5.5 draft. Has anyone viewing tried to bring a boat through at Oregon. Bridge height posts seem to vary. I really don't want to go outside all the way to Okrakoke inlet if I don't have to. Thanks for your help.

Looks like Oregon Inlet is out of the question for the foreseeable future… I first heard of shoaling to 3 feet under the center span a couple of months ago, but the locals rarely use the center span, anyway…

I’ve run the inlet quite a bit over the years, but no way would I ever try it with your mast height… there haven’t been clearance boards on the bridge for years, for one – and the fact that the deepest water is usually through one of the side spans which might have somewhat less than 65’ would make that a no-brainer…

Sad situation, Oregon Inlet can be a great route in the right conditions, but unfortunately these sorts of situations are about to become the New Normal with federal funds for maintenance of inlets and waterways growing smaller in the future…

you would benefit by entering at ocracoke as silver lake is good anchorage. Oregon inlet is shallow and the inside channel is difficult as well as limited anchorage choices and further away.

Ocracoke isn't the easiest inlet either. Little Creek to Beaufort NC is only around a day -- can you push that far?

Aside from the part from the Bay to the first lock, The Dismal Swamp can be an enjoyable route.
