mizzen sail

So my mizzen is in pretty sad shape, and am looking to get a new one, or a good used one. Haven't been able to find any used ones, I have looked all over. Went to bacons last weekend, they had no mizzens, but gave me a price of 900$ to make one. I dont really know much about sail prices, but this seams pretty pricey for a sall with 21 luff 9 foot... Its the smallest sail on the boat, would hate to replace the main at those prices! what do you guy think? know of any place I could find a sail like this??

Thanks mates.

nolatom will become famous soon enough
re can't find one used-- Really? I'd think there would be a bunch of cast-off mainsails around that size from smaller boats that would make you a mizzen. But I defer to you if you've really looked.

Lots links here for used sails... you can usually search by type, boat, or dimensions.

Google

You don't get much nowadays in a new sail for under $1K so I don't see that price as outrageous. The labour involved is not directly proportional to sail size.

I just ordered a new mizzen and main. My mizzen was $560 for 21' luff and 6.5' foot. I think you would have trouble with a used mizzen as mizzens are generally cut much flatter than mainsails since they are down wind and always in disturbed air.

I have seen quite a few small mains of these dimensions, but If Im gona hand out the green backs I want a real mizzen for my boat.

by the way how different is a mizzen from a main. Iv been told the leach is kinda bowed inward on a mizzen when a main is kinda strait down.

I expect that would depend more on the geometry of the mast - ie how much bend, but it'd also likely there's a fundamental difference in what you'd want for a mizzen (that necessarily has to work in the affected breeze of the main).

I'm having mine made by a local sailmaker that I have worked with in the past. The leach can be cut how ever you like depending on what you want to do with the boats performance. I'm personally having a little extra roach added to my new mizzen to help light air performance.
