Funny Circumnavigation Story

When I was in Ixtapa, Mexico last month, I met a guy named Don who had just completed a 16-year circumnavigation -- if I recall correctly, in a 1970-ish Halberg Rassey 38. Don, who is sixty-three, was in pretty bad health -- with very bad legs -- and limped along as we walked to lunch.

During lunch I asked him many questions, and he had a lot of interesting and funny experiences. When I asked him how he did with fresh water on long passages, he said that he did OK & used salt water a lot, to wash his dishes and clothes.

The next day when I saw him on the docks (and had thought about what he'd told me), I asked him if wearing clothes that were washed in salt water didn't make for hot, sticky afternoons. He responded by saying, "Fritz, to tell you the truth, when I get offshore, I don't wear any clothes at all." I thought, "What a sensible idea."

Well I hope he uses plenty of sunscreen. There are some places that you DON'T want to get sunburn (and I don't mean in Texas).
