Although from the description, he could also mean an early IOR boat with tumblehome and pinched ends, and yes, they were ocassionally built using epoxy staturated cold-molded wooden construction.

Oh yeah, and boats which are shaped like a football, wide in the center and narrow at the ends, generally do not have more useful volume than boats which are moderately wide for much of their length. And double enders, in particular, are short of space compared to an equal length transom boat.
On the other hand, he is in France and their footballs are spheres....
