Hi Stephaneg and welcome to SailNet.

You're going to have to be a little more specific. What exactly do you mean by "shaped like a football"? Are you referring to boats that have a rounded transom as opposed to the flat transoms that many boats have? If so, this is referred to as a "canoe stern" and many boats have them. Is there a picture on the Internet of the specific boat you are interested in that you could post a link to?

Best,
Bob

I think the OP is referring to a double-ender.

Jeff_H has a spectacular aura about Jeff_H has a spectacular aura about
Although from the description, he could also mean an early IOR boat with tumblehome and pinched ends, and yes, they were ocassionally built using epoxy staturated cold-molded wooden construction.

Picture of an early IOR design...

Oh yeah, and boats which are shaped like a football, wide in the center and narrow at the ends, generally do not have more useful volume than boats which are moderately wide for much of their length. And double enders, in particular, are short of space compared to an equal length transom boat.

On the other hand, he is in France and their footballs are spheres....
