Still working on my baby. help with WOOD interior

Still working on the boat as time and money allows. Mostly "time" limits me now.

this past year has not be good to us BUT we still have our home still have income and still have food on the table SO better than a lot of other people :-)

anyway have a bit of time the next few weeks so plan to do more work on my sailboat.

if you remember my last thread the interior is "gutted" but the "framing" is still their. SO I just need to make new panels and tops and eventually cabinet doors etc.. to finish it up.

I have access to 1/2" cabinet grade MAHOGANY plywood. is this OK to use on the interior? I would just LOVE to have a really pretty stained varnished mahogany interior.

Found someone who has a bunch of the stuff on CL for $20 a sheet so I am going to go grab 3 sheets (wish I could grab it ALL !! this stuff is $130 a sheet!!!)

is it ok to use? 1/2 or 3/4 ? (he has both) I was thinking half inch is 50% lighter but is it too thin?

as usual any help greatly appreciated !! I REALLY REALLY hope to get this thing wet this year! I want to use it so badly it hurts!

also got a funny picture/video for you guys. I also have a little power boat I traded for an old diesel car. getting that back in the water too (I want to get the sailboat going the family wants the power boat going so I conscripted them to help me 50/50 time on each boat hehe)

well I needed to get it from storage at the warehouse to our store (13miles) its a pretty light boat and VERY well balanced and I was feeling adventurous :-)

YouTube - ‪Metro Towing Boat.mp4‬‏

BTW I kept it at 35mph (while the weight did not scare me a nice crosswind or gust DOES scare me :-) I got an average 37mpg towing it :-) hehe

using the van would have cost me a full 2+ gallons of gas. using the metro cost me about 3/4 of a gallon.

"cabinet" Grade plywood probably won't be able to tolerate the moisture you will expose it to in a sailboat for very long.

is there anything I can do to treat/seal it? I won't get another change at a nice wood like this but I also don't want to waste my time either :-)

You'll be fine with cabinet grade, provided you seal the edges with epoxy. It's better than the particle board, press board anc chepa laminate furniture I have seen in a few recent vintage production boats. 1/2" ply will work fine, buy a third sheet- at that price, it's worth it, and if you have to build furniture that would benefit from increased thickness, you can always laminate two pieces of ply together.

cool. and its mahogany ply not regular chip ply. Will be sure to seal the edges with nice aero grade epoxy (got some extra lying around from a few carbon rockets I made)

definitely buying 3 sheets 2 for the boat 1 for "who knows what" I wish I could buy more :-) Gonna give it a nice stain then seal the edges with epoxy and varnish to seal it all up.

Seal the edges of each piece after you cut it to shape rather than the entire sheet. It was not clear from your description what you were planning.
