Unhappy Scavenger Hunt

So,

Today is the day I decide to take out my 8 HP Yanmar and figure out why it is locked up. Well, after sliding out the engine and disconnecting it from the tranny which also houses the gear box I find the culprit. The pressure plate in front or behind the gear plate (however you care to look at it- the pressure plate is closest to the prop shaft) is broken into three solid pieces. This thing is thick cast iron and it was BROKEN in three pieces. Another minor piece had been broken in the mix with some kind of pressure lock pins damaged as well... ANYWHO, to the meat of the story.
I take out the broken chunks of metal and go to the closest diesel shop only to find that the part I need: Part 104211-83111 for the ysm8 model has been discontinued since 1991.
So, unless I care to have a piece of cast iron fabricated by a machine shop (I do not), or I decide to sell the engine -kit and all and use the funds to buy and mount an outboard (I do not) then I need to find the pressure plate that goes in the bell housing of my tranny that operates in the clutch.

Where do I even start?

Discontinued?

Is it possible the part number has been replaced by a NEW part...ie with a NEW/Different part number? I found this to be the case with my exhaust manifold.

Something tells me the transmission is NOT actually made by Yanmar. There should be a plate that'll tell you the manufacturer. This may help in finding a replacement.

Yanmar also made tractor and generator engines, although the transmissions should be different; possibly gives you an additional avenue to pursue?

I'm not a mechanic; but it sounds like the transmission has some issues. What caused this piece to break in the first place. A replacement part may fall prey to the same fate. In addition, there are other pieces that are damaged as well.

It may be cheaper in the long run to look for a replacement transmission and/or engine + transmission. Look for someone trying to power-up their boat.

Hope you find an economical solution,

Skipper, J/36 "Zero Tolerance"

PS If I'm right, Yanmar used the same transmission (not made by them) for several different models. Knowing the transmission I feel will be the key in finding the part.

PPS Why not E-mail Yanmar directly with your problem?

Try contacting these guys. They know more about Yanmar engines than just about anyone.

Sounds like the pressure plate wasn't bolted down correctly , missaligned or wrong spacers were used (if any spacers were used)
something caused the plate not to sit flat and bolting it down caused a warp & cracking ...IMHO

It Very hard to crack a press plate one just about has to be doing something wrong to crack one ...

Good luck
