Southampton to Guersney

hi there

how long should it take to sail accross to Guernsey from southampton

any ideas ?

Depends upon the wind and the tide. It looks like about 100 miles. At five knots, about a day, perhaps, if you plan it right and are lucky with the breeze. Two, certainly, maybe three if you miss the tide, or more if the wind dies. Watch out for traffic.

Last time we did it a few years ago on a 34'-6" Colvic Watson Motor Sailer with main sail and genoa rigging set we did it in a steady 17 hrs, but as said above tide and wind speed especially play a big part.

Make sure you 'fill up' as Paulk says above the English Channel shipping traffic is one of the busiest in the world and you may need that engine on sooner rather than later.

If you have AIS watch out for the 'Container ships' they are the ones that are really shifting at a high rate of knots and can catch you out.

Have a good trip and do you passage plan 'very carefully' for going around Guernsey and if heading for St Peter Port.
