Outboard for dinghy

Hi,

I just got a 9 foot dinghy with the purchase of a new sailboat. No outboard motor came with it. I already owned an almost new Yamaha 2.5 hp 4 stroke.
Is it srtong enough for this dinghy or do I need to get something bigger ?
Will appreciate comments. Thanks. JB from Canada.

Sounds like you should be able to manage, unless you want to go water-skiing.

It depends on where you'll be using the dinghy. If you're using it to regularly cart water, fuel, groceries etc out to a mooring in windy or rough conditions, you might decide you need more power. If you can get by with the smaller one you have, it will be much easier to take on & off the boat. I found the 9.9 hp motor I had to be very heavy and awkward, I switched to a 3 hp Merc....much easier.

I have a 2HP Honda, used it on an 8 foot inflatable and a 10 foot
pram. Not fast but enough power to beat back against the wind
and chop. Ran it hard for many years, absolutely no problems, as
with all of my Honda powered things, motorcycles, generator, snow
blower, and cars. It only weighs 27 pounds, that is a good thing!!
