The Bumfuzles are back update

As of the 27th Pat has had a few incidents to cope with. He has
no radio, radar, or AIS. When his engine quit out of Santa Cruz he
had good sea room. When leaving San Diego he ran aground. Later on his mainsail
ripped in half. He caught a commercial fishing line causing his prop
shaft to break / come apart, luckily he had an off shore wind
and was able to sail into Cabo San Lucas where he got it fixed. He is observing symptoms of a possible head gasket leak or break, oil in the
coolant and white exhaust smoke. He has about 300 plus miles to go.
Wishing him some more good luck. Great pictures and details on his website:

Hey dab - do you know why they went to the mono from the original cat? I'm sure I could find it, but that's a lot of reading!

Smack,

IIRC, reading a long time ago, he(they?) got the itch for another boat
and kind of liked the inside space arrangement of their present boat
which they bought sight unseen. I don't think either of them had
any on the water mono hull sailing experience beforehand. Sometime
back before they left I suggested a couple of local trial runs. Ali replied
"we don't do trial runs, we just go, it's all part of the overall adventure",
or words to that effect. Pat has commented a number of times about
the differences between the catamaran and their present boat. I am not
sure he really likes the mono hull?

Right, he did mention the big difference in price more than once.

Yeah, found it...

Here are two entries where he talks about it. Pretty interesting in some detail:

Lost dog: blind in one eye, missing a leg, tail chopped off, ear bitten off. Answers to the name of Lucky.
Seems like Pat has had a "Lucky" kind of week!

JonEisberg will become famous soon enough
Pat still doesn't think much of us Cyber Sailors who hang out in these "chat rooms", but it appears he's still playing pretty close attention to what all the armchair experts are saying about them this time out, as well... (grin)

Quote:

I haven't talked much about the trip south but that hasn't stopped the cruising chat room experts from weighing in. One idiot said the trip would take me thirty-five days if I were to stop every night to sleep. Huh? Seriously, this guy has thousands of posts. These are the kind of "experts" on these forums. Stop every night to sleep. Like I'm driving a car down the interstate. "Well that was a good day, looks like the sun is starting to go down, I suppose I should pull in for the night and get some rest." Remind me, have I ever mentioned just how highly I think of the people who spout off on these chat rooms?
That's OK, glad he's made it down there in one piece, good for him...

He still has over 300 miles to go with oil in the coolant and
white exhaust smoke and has used up a WHOLE lot of his
luck. Best wishes for him.

Just looking at the picture of his new shaft coupler:

bumfuzzle.com

I wonder how deep the 2 set screws go into the shaft,
if at all? The first big burst of reverse may be interesting?
