We are on the way to renaming her. I have the vinyl lettering off (a razor blade carefully applied did the trick) and Goof-off (recommended by the vinyl sign store available from Home Depot) took the residue right off. Now I have a shadow left on the gelcoat on the transom. I need some ideas on how to deal with this latest issue.

In my experience, if the shadow is not terribly pronounced, a year or two in the sun will take care of it for you.

It will probably fade in time as suggested. If you use some fiberglass stain remover (FSR), it may lighten it a bit, but time in the sun will likely be your answer.

Why not put the new name right over the same spot? This will distract from the shadow.

Cannot stand seeing a boat with no name ....

You might need to compound it out.

The sun put it there. The sun will take it away. Be patient.

Could this be one of the superstition penalties that are exacted when one dares tempt the gods of the sea by re-naming a boat?

You are seeing the surface that has been protected by the lettering it still has much of its chemical make up in tact. Try cleaning the area with acetone and laquer thinner to remove any wax and then bleach it. That may help some but it is a tough job to get that shadow out.

Compounding and rewaxing is the only thing that helps other than waiting for the sun to fix it which by the way is going to take about a season and 8 to 10 cases of beer good luck!

We removed the old name back in February. We decided to let the Sun deal with the ghost of the previous lettering. Before next Spring, we''ll put on the new name, right over where the old name used to be.

I used a 1500 grit sandpaper from the autoparts store and wet sanded the "shadow" of about three old names off my stern. It shined up that part of the stern so much though I ended up doing the whole transom.
