Whales in NY Harbor

I was sailing near NY harbor yesterday. The USCG announced the sighting of two Whales near Ambrose Light.

Does anyone know if there is a website that records Whale sitings?

Thanks

There isn't a device on this world that can measure the indifference I have for that statement.

More than likely the announcement was made to notify ships to maintain distance from them...now that the powers that be regulate that as well....

IIRC, you must stay away 500 yds, yet they want all this information and video that would be tough to get at that distance...

To me, not worth the trouble or risk of being sited for being too close...

I am looking to see of someone reported the type of whale observed.

Thanks for the info.

I don't sail NY harbor, and this doesn't answer your question of what type of whale you saw, but a Google search says that humpback whales (and dolphins and seals) are reappearing in the harbor in increasing numbers. Which I think is kind of cool. Navigation hazards notwithstanding, doesn't this indicate improved water quality?

last year a humpback was caught in some lobster pots around its tail that they were able to save. also seals have been coming in to the Barnegat bay from fall to spring, and even nurse sharks in the bay as well.
