I did like the suggestion of being able to help out with problems in real-time. However,i think a chat is not the best medium for that. Better would be some way for the person with the problem to stream video and audio of what's going on, and folks could "call in" with audio or text to offer suggestions. Audio would be best because it would allow the host to focus on his problem and keep his head in the bilge our wherever.

A chat widget feels like a very 1990s solution.
actually I can - there are commercial add-ons that are just as good as Facebook's chat that integrate with Vbulletin.

The problem with audio is that many systems do not have built in microphones and video is always configuration problematic. Thanks for the ideas.

I agree with treilley that the forum retains important information, but most of the time questions get asked (and answered) multiple times anyway.

I'm not going to vote because I don't have a black or white answer. I would prefer to have a chat room with a purpose, something that makes Sailnet stand out and give non-members a reason to check it out. Any site can have a chat room that just sits there waiting for someone to log into it.
Yes - a chat ROOM could be reserved for a guest speaker.

Like I said earlier - I'm thinking of the chat feature for conversations between two people not a generic chat room.

Ok, i would be cool with it between a couple of folks. Could be a nice way to discuss something as others have said. A guest speaker thing would be nice too.... OK, I will vote "yes".

I have an idea...how about an attempt to fix the ridiculous search function?

That would actually be helpful to the site and the users. Just say'in
DRFerron and Shipislandpirate like this.

Now that is a great idea...perhaps a monthly email blast?

I voted no, but I'm sort of on the fence about it. I think there would be the potential for the loose of some very valuable knowledge that can be gained by one and all. But on the other hand a chat room could take some of the conversations that develop within a thread ( unrelated) to another place, although they do become amusing at times. I do like the guest speaker idea.

I voted "no" 'cause I wouldn't use it (my kids call me Jurassic Jim...) and I prefer to browse and chase threads around rather than thinking in real time

Simply Yes..

If you dont like it or dont want to you dont have to participate

Reverse chat..I like that idea to have guest experts

(Actually I would like reverse chat in real life...that way I could take things back I said...or take back ALL my miss spellings)- just saying

Dave

I voted no for the same reason I removed myself from facebook. Every time I went on to monitor what the kids and family were doing a "friend" would try to open a chat w/ me. I have to talk w/ clients and patients all day. My time on the computer is like my reading the paper time.
All that being said, a guest speaker concept would be great!
Jim
