I learned a lot from friends, and then I joined a yacht club in LB and learned more from club members, then started racing with the club and getting a lot of experience/advice.
If you don't have a lot of experienced sailing friends, you should look into a yacht club. It will end up costing you money, but you'll get lots of benefits out of it. New contacts, events (parties/races/cruises), use of the club, not to mention a bunch of salty dogs that will help you learn (at least that's how our club has been)
If you just want to go with lessons/private instructor, I have a buddy who is a sailing instructor and can give you his contact info. He worked with our club's Junior sailing program and works professionally as a sailing instructor for a company up in Redondo.
Good luck and have fun
