2011 Mackinaw Race Storm Video

As you probably know, two people died in this year's race when one boat capsized. The Youtube link and text below shows the storm from a J109 in the race....54 knots experienced on that boat, one boat reported 100 kts. gust.

‪2011 Race to Mackinac‬‏ - YouTube

At 54 knots, the boat had a knockdown that lasted about 15 minutes and until winds let up a bit. This boat had sails up.

A report on Catalina320 org. site gave a verbal report of C320 in the storm. They were able to get their sails down in advance (main down, genoa set at 80%, and heaved to). They managed reasonably well, but did get some damage.

A nearby C&C 33 with main sail up was knocked down.

Sorry for mispelling in title...should be Mackinac

Some of the video from this storm was just amazing and something I hope I never experience from a boat.

As for the mis spelling it is done all the time, and listening to newcasters butcher the name drives me nuts. Interesting that the island is Mackinac and the city is Mackinaw City...both pronounced as the city is spelled.
