blt2ski will become famous soon enough
I would spend the money and get a sock. I have one for my 30'. It ws nice when learning to use it. I still use it with spouse and myself. If I have my kids/race crew on board, the sock is at home in the garage! Even daughter and myself have run the spin with out a sock. Spouse is a bit less active if you will, so the sock is nice.

I do feel the sockless option is a bit faster, not much, but the set does seem overall better to operate It is also easier to gybe with out the sock catching on the top of the forestay etc.

If you can learn to use a pole ala a symetric system, you can go about as dead downwind as a rig with a symetric kite!

Look for a new one personally! UNLESS you know the previous owner, as spin cloth is pretty light, easy to damage vs a jib or main.

Here is a shot of my boat a few yrs back with the sock up. Thanks to dodenja for the pic.

Here is one with out the sock.
