More Dolphins in the Sound

On 8/3 and again yesterday I saw pods of dolphins in LI Sound. There have been sporadic reports of this unusual event. There's no doubt, if you sail here keep an eye on the water!

I did not see the pod of 100 or so that came into the Sound last year but it made the news.
Thanks for the first hand report of Dolphin sightings this summer.

What part of the sound do they show up in? I'm all the way west.. out of pt. washington. I wonder if they would come all that way to look at the manhattan skyline?

Friday, Aug 12 at 3:40 pm we saw a pod 1/4 NM southeast of Hart Island around the Bronx/Westchester border.

Musta been at least 20 breaching.

Speeding powerboaters chased them and scared them under.

Wanderingstar (John) saw them a day or so ago out by Mt. Sinai.
I'd bet they have had enough of LI Sound and are heading back south as a pod.
They have had a few dolphins stick around through the winter and die on the south fork (aka Hamptons) as the waters cool in the fall.
I hope they all make it safely back into the Atlantic. I'm glad they came to the Sound again and I hope they all headed south again.

Dolphins

Hey,

I saw the dolphins in 2009.

That's where the pic same from. That's the Throggs Neck Bridge in the background!

I was out Friday and then again today (from Mt. Sinai to Bridgeport and back) but I didn't see any dolphins.

Darn!

Great photo Barry! Thanks.
JM, the rising tide favors you as you go east, but only past about Hempstead Harbor, then it comes from the other way. If you can arrange your trip to arrive there before high water slack you might get favorable currents for much of the way.
