With iPhone, the chat feature blocks half of the screen.

Okay, but only if you learn grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

WooHoo!

I *finally* figured out how to turn it OFF!

Click where it says "xx People Here"
Click the gear (settings)
Click "turn off"

Hey, that's my line ....

Seriously ... eherlihly nailed it, as did DRFerron. Turning off chat reduces the footprint to a small square in the very right hand bottom of the screen. If you are as disinterested in the chat function as I am then turn it off and rid yourself of the clutter.

Huh, I have to turn something off that I never turned on? Why the hell doesn't the numb nuts that turned it on have to turn it off? I've got enough to do securing hatches, coiling lines that are laying all over the place and turning off lights that people have left on, now this? I'm telling ya, if I find out who turned it on knowing that I'd have to turn it off I'm going to punch their lights out!

Thanks for the info., I'm off.
