Seagull outboards.... unethical

I was loaned an old seagull to use as an emergnecy back-up

I had forgotten how much oil and petrol they pish out into the environment

maybe it is time we stopped using them

Yeah....I had an old seagull on my old boat (a Victory 21). Rarely used it for just the reasons you state. The 10:1 fuel mix and the essentially seal-less lower unit seemed designed to keep the lubricating oil industry in business. I have to admit, however, it always started.

it is an astonishing bit of engineering

and stupidly reliable and easy to fix

nearly immortal

but the environmental price is too high

in my opinion

It funny how the longer this goes on the more apt the Slug's official name seems.

As for Seagulls .... their owners are akin to people who drive old banger VW Kombis or Morris Minors plastered with Save the Earth stickers. (Not that a Morris Minor could be considered a wonderful piece of engineering.

And to people who sail GRP sailboats, which have to be a nightmare to get rid of when the time comes...
