Sounds like Irene might be a very bad one...
Just heard Joe Bastardi on the radio saying he thinks Irene is going to be one of the three "greatest" storms ever to hit the mid-Atlantic coast since the 1800s. He said he expects it to tear down lots of trees and powerlines and that he thinks it's going to be a 10 to 15 billion-dollar storm, in terms of damage.

Yeah, Needless to say this one has me on full alert.
I just measured the height of the poles at my floating dock..from todays high water mark..to the top of the pole... If we get more than a 5 foot surge...( I factored in an extra foot for spring tides on sunday already) My dock will float off the poles...
So tomorrow is decision day...Stay in...or Haul out...a rock and a hard place..

Tempest .... I think haul out might be a better of the two choices if you even THINK the surge will cause your docks to float. Have your boat skewered like a shish-ka-bob is not a pleasant choice. Nor is having your boat join with all the other boats that will surely wind up in a junk heap along some seawall or on a shoreline somwwhere miles away. Have you checked your insurance policy ? They may require and pay for a haul out. Best of luck over the next few days. Stay safe. You can always get another boat

It's such a big and slow moving storm, sounds like they're expecting a big storm surge.
From here:

Category 2 landfalls may not sound that significant, since Hurricane Bob of 1991 made landfall over Rhode Island as a Category 2, and did only $1.5 billion in damage (1991 dollars), killing 17. But Irene is a far larger and more dangerous storm than Bob. The latest wind analysis from NOAA/HRD puts Irene's storm surge danger at 4.8 on a scale of 0 to 6, equivalent to a borderline Category 3 or 4 hurricane's storm surge. Bob had a much lower surge potential, due to its smaller size, and the fact it was moving at 32 mph when it hit land. Irene will be moving much slower, near 18 mph, which will give it more time to pile up a big storm surge. The slower motion also means Irene's surge will last longer, and be more likely to be around during high tide. Sunday is a new moon, and tides will be at their highest levels of the month during Sunday night's high tide cycle.

This storm surge prediction site is very informative, I would suggest you have a look...
Storm surge imagery for the U.S. coast : Weather Underground
Your corner of Raritan Bay is pretty vulnerable, water really piles up in there, with nowhere to go...
Best of luck, whatever you decide...

They're forecasting 5-10 feet here, we'll be okay if it doesn't go higher.

That storm surge site is officially scaring the bejesus out of me...
That 5 ft cushion seems woefully inadequate at this point. I think I'm convinced that I'll have to haul out.
Boat US will pay Half the cost of a haul..which was never really a factor in my decision..but every bit helps..
Good luck to everyone..this will be a nail biter!

My boat already is on the hard. She has been since January, while I've been doing a whole mess of work on her.
The ironic thing is I was really hoping to have her back in the water by now - or by the end of August at least. And now it turns out to be a good thing that I haven't actually finished the work yet...
