When does the southern migration start?

Is there anyone planning on heading south for the winter?

If so, hen will you be heading south?

Depending on how far north.....

you are. But the early birds start in early Late September/ early October, just after most of the hurricane season is over. By later October, here in the Boston area, most have left and well on their way.

Due to insurance, most don't go further south than North Carolina before the end of October.

Depending on hurricanes, we'll be leaving Annapolis in late Sept or very early Oct; our insurance won't let us be south of Savannah, GA until Nov 15 so we'll probably wait in Charleston or Beaufort SC until then.

I know this was meant in jest, but still. Two years ago, this "conventional wisdom" turned out to be anything but wise - the first nor'easter caught us about 3 days after the show and we ended up sitting in Deltaville for 4 days. And if you stick around Annapolis to receive anything you ordered from the boat show, its even worse. Nope, if conditions permit we'll be leaving right after the SSCA gam, which is 2 weekends before the show.

It's our intent to leave the Annapolis area right after boat show time - meandering down to stay just ahead of the cold weather if we can. We have a complete enclosure, so we can stand it a little better than those with an open cockpit or just a bimini / dodger.

If the weather's bad, we try to put in long days , but if not, we like to stop at each town for a few days and visit and soak up the flavor.

Anybody heard if the Dismal Swamp route has any problems due to the big fire? (We smelled - and saw - smoke from that clear up in Annapolis.)

We expect to hang around in Vero Beach this trip, until March or April, and then head to the Bahamas for a month or three.

I believe I just heard on the news last night they have reopened or will reopen the ditch this weekend. They had closed it due to fires and then debris from Irene.
