radio checks

I'm sitting at anchor and no one on ch 9 is answering my radio checks, only hear transmissions like the pan pan on 16- what is everyone's solution when they get no response? I've heard contacting sea tow on 16 then hopping channels is legal but like I said I don't want to interfere with the pan pan xmsn..

Try a working channel.

Tried 68 and no response, it's a handheld so the range is a factor. There is a bridgetender about a mile away...

Look at SeaTow web site and see if there is an automated radio check near you. We have at least two on the Chesapeake and they work great.

It is illegal to use Channel 16 VHF-FM for radio checks. If requesting a radio check, use Channel 16 VHF-FM to hail the nearest Coast Guard Unit. Once the Coast Guard Unit acknowledges your hail, request Coast Guard Unit to switch and answer Channel 22A VHF-FM. Once Coast Guard Unit answers on Channel 22A VHF-FM, you may now request a radio check. The Coast Guard Unit will respond accordingly.

Before transmitting, listen long enough to be sure there is not a distress in progress and to also ensure you will not interfere with another station making a call.

Try 13 to contact the bridge, at least that's what they are on in the Seattle area.

John 13 is for ship's bridge to ship's bridge.

It is ch 13 for the bridges around here on Barnegat Bay. I'll try them .

In Juan de Fuca I contact the big guys on 13.
